6 of the most common mistakes for beginners

As a beginner, there are multiple reasons why you may find yourself falling off the board, or why you can't stand up in the first place. There are a number of rules to remember and just one mistake can be the cause of this.

Rule 1.    Lying position
Lie in the middle of the board with your chest just in front of the centre point.

(Correct)

Mistakes:

  • Placing your chest too far forward – when the wave comes, water will flow over the board causing the tip of the board to point downwards into the water. This will cause you to fall forwards off the board (nose dive). By keeping the nose above the water, the board will catch the wave and the board will move forward.

(Incorrect)

  • Placing your chest too far back – when your body weight is at the back, the tail of the board will be submerged in the water causing the board to drag. You will lose speed as the waves will roll under you and can't push you forward.

(Incorrect)

Rule 2.    Hand positioning on the board
Place your hands either side of your chest with your elbows sticking out and push up.

(Correct)

Mistakes:

  • Putting your arms too far forward – this will take you longer to get up and will be more difficult as you have little power to push up from the board. The more bend you have in your arms, the more power you have to push up.

(Incorrect)

Rule 3.    Standing position on the board
Position yourself down the central line. Stand sideways with your front foot on the chest line of the board and your back foot slightly wider than shoulder width.

(Correct)

Mistakes:

  • Positioning your feet too far at the back - this will make it harder for the wave to push you or pick up speed.

(Incorrect)

Positioning your feet too far at the front – this will cause the nose to dip into the water.

(Incorrect)

Rule 4.    Foot position when standing on the board
The back foot should be at a 90 degree angle to the central line (facing the side of the board) and the front foot should be at a 45 degree angle.

(Correct)

Mistakes:

  • Both feet pointing towards the nose – you will have no balance on the board.

(Incorrect)

Rule 5.    Knee position when surfing
Bend your knees and waist so that your chest is positioned over the front knee.

(Correct)

Mistakes:

  • Standing upright with straight legs – this will reduce stability and hold you back from making fast turns.

(Incorrect)

Rule 6.    Eyes
Look upward from the board and in the direction you are going.

(Correct)

Mistakes:

  • Looking down – this will cause your head to dip, which in turn causes your body to lean forward and fall off the board. By positioning your head in the direction you want to go, your body will follow. This also helps you turn.

(Incorrect)

There we have it! Now you know the rules, all you have to do is put them into practise and you'll be surfing the waves in no time.
